  1. In the beginning in Part 1 Bierce includes few details about the man that is being hung. He also doesn't tell why the man is being hung. This adds suspense because you want to know who this man is and why he is in the position that he is in.  When he doesn't tell whom the man is it causes the reader to gasp for more. The reader wants to find out what is wrong and who this man is. When the writer doesn't do this it makes the reader think harder. This adds suspense to the story and in this story the writer does it really well.
  2. a.Time and motion seems to be distorted when he is waiting to be hanged because everything seems to go very slow and the memories seemed to last forever for him.

      b. His distorted perceptions are important because it was helping him remember his past and what he wishes would be in his future.

3.(A) The narrator states that Farquhar is a very well to do man that owns slaves and he is very wealthy. (B) It also says that Farquhar lives in Alabama.  The narrator believes that the war is horrible

  1. He wants to have the glory of going out as a soldier.  It is ironic because he dies from being hung and that is not the way that a soldier goes out. (B)  He gets hung before he gets a chance to hug his wife.
  2. A) Details in part III suggests that Farquhar's journey occurred in his head because when he runs through a path surrounded by trees and then he gets to a gate and his wife was inside the gate and he felt as if he was in heaven.  You can see that he was thinking because his wife was already dead and he sees his wife when he enters the gate.

B) The journey was connected to the plan of escape because he was planning to escape but in the plan he was going to die anyways at the end of his journey, which is when he sees his wife.

      6. the portrayals of farquhars final thoughts and sensation is realistic because I would think of escaping from death and then the happy moments that had with my family; they are realistic because if u were in the position u would think about escaping and the happy moments that u had with your family.

     7. A. The third person point of view is appropriate for this story because without we would not be in the illusion that it was real.

B. The story would be different because the reader would instantly know that it was not a dream.

    8. His use of flashback contributes to the effectiveness of this story by creating an allusion of him escaping from his horrible ordeal.  His allusion was him is able to escape from being hung and running back to his wife.
